Set in a scrapyard in early-1950s Czechoslovakia, this bittersweet comedy follows a group of so-called "bourgeois elements" — among them a philosophy professor, a saxophonist, and a milkman — sent for political re-education, and the fragile romances that bloom between them and the women working alongside them. Directed by Jiří Menzel and based on stories by Bohumil Hrabal, the film pairs sharp political satire with warmth and tenderness.
