Ecce homo Homolka
Jaroslav Papoušek — CZ — 1969 — 80 min — czech — with english subtitles
The Homolka family sets out from the city for a Sunday trip to the countryside, only to find none of the things they base their lives on — neither peace nor comfort. Their vision of an idyllic end to the week slowly crumbles under waves of shouting, blame, and self-pity, as their inability to care about anyone but themselves takes over.
This biting study of small-town middle-class values relies especially on authentic dialogue — many lines have since become classics — and the naturalistic acting of Josef Šebánek, Helena Růžičková, František Husák, and Marie Motlová. The unruly twin boys were played by the sons of Miloš Forman, Matěj and Petr. The film’s authentic feel was supported by editing from Jiřina Lukešová, who worked on some of the most iconic Czech New Wave films, and cinematography by Jozef Ort-Šnep, previously a collaborator on documentaries by Karel Vachek.
