The Art of Negative Thinking
Bård Breien — Norway — 2006 — 79 minutes — Norwegian with Czech subtitles
Geirr is 33 years old. Two years ago, he had a car accident that left him unable to walk — and impotent. His wife Ingvild, desperate to save their failing marriage, invites a group of people with physical disabilities for an extended visit, led by an enthusiastic psychologist named Tori. But Geirr, a self-destructive fan of Johnny Cash and war movies, rebels against this unwelcome invasion of “positive” energy. Armed with brutal honesty, he tries to take control of the situation. Over the course of one night in a modern house in a quiet neighborhood, the group confronts fake sincerity, suffocating compassion, and seemingly proven methods of emotional healing. In his directorial debut, Bård Breien blends the familiar formula of Scandinavian psychological drama about human relationships with a sarcastically dark comedy shot in a raw, quasi-documentary style. The film’s unique tone is enhanced by a music selection for true connoisseurs — featuring Steppenwolf, Nina Simone, and, of course, Johnny Cash.
