Black Swan
Darren Aronofsky — USA — 2010 — 104 minutes — English with Czech subtitles
In the psychological thriller Black Swan, set in the intense world of New York City’s ballet scene, visionary director Darren Aronofsky takes viewers on a gripping and chilling journey into the mind of a young ballerina who becomes terrifyingly perfect in her pursuit of the lead role in Swan Lake. The story follows Nina (Natalie Portman), a dancer with the New York City Ballet, whose life — like that of everyone in the profession — is completely consumed by dance. She lives with her mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), a former ballerina who never fully achieved her own dreams and now passionately supports her daughter’s career. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) announces a new season première of Swan Lake and replaces the current prima ballerina Beth Macintyre (Winona Ryder), Nina is his first choice for the lead. However, a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), joins the company and immediately impresses Leroy with her sensuality — becoming Nina’s fiercest rival. Swan Lake demands a ballerina who can embody both the pure and graceful White Swan and the dark, seductive Black Swan. Nina is the perfect White Swan — but the Black Swan is far from her natural persona. For Lily, however, it’s quite the opposite…
A twisted and uneasy friendship develops between the two dancers, but as their rivalry intensifies, Nina begins to unravel. Desperate to hold onto her dream role, she risks crossing a line from which there may be no return.
