Sister Act
Emile Ardolino — USA — 1992 — 100 min — English with Czech subtitles
The fiery lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier spends her spare time with her lover — married mobster Vince. Unfortunately, one day she witnesses him pointing a gun at the head of a disloyal associate. Guided by her strong survival instincts, she decides it’s time to flee his embrace. She runs straight to the police and agrees to testify against him. Grateful to have a key witness, the police hide Deloris in the last place the mob would think to look — a convent. Appalled by everything even remotely resembling a nun, Deloris is furious and would seemingly rather take her chances with the mob. But it’s too late. Now she’s stuck with an unflattering habit, strict discipline, and a shocking lack of entertainment. After a short bout of despair, the determined diva bounces back and soon turns the convent upside down. The Mother Superior, desperate to keep Deloris out of sight, assigns her to the choir — hoping she’ll fade into the background. But Deloris, full of initiative, wastes no time transforming the nuns’ dreary singing into electrifying performances. Church attendance skyrockets, and media attention follows. Unfortunately, Vince eventually learns where Deloris is hiding. She is kidnapped — but the gangsters don’t count on a divine counterattack. The determined sisters band together and march into the lion’s den to rescue their choir star and let justice (and sisterhood) prevail.
