SUMMER CINEMA IN THE KASÁRNA COURTYARD IS BACK!

Desperado
Robert Rodriguez — USA/Mexico — 1995 — 104 minutes — English + Czech subtitles

He was once the best Mariachi (guitarist and singer) on the U.S. – Mexico border. But one day, he accidentally crossed the interests of the local drug cartel and was forced to fight for his life. In the brutal confrontation, the dealers killed his beautiful girlfriend and maimed his hand. Now, instead of a guitar, he carries an impressive arsenal of firearms in his case, and revenge has become the sole purpose of his life. The last of the dealers (all the others have already paid for their mistake with their lives), named Bucho, is as powerful as he is ruthless — and before the final showdown can happen, Mariachi must literally shoot his way through an army of bloodthirsty henchmen.

Desperado was directed by young Hispanic-American filmmaker Robert Rodriguez as a sequel to his semi-amateur debut El Mariachi. A film enthusiast, Rodriguez made the first movie for just seven thousand dollars, which he earned as a test subject in medical trials for experimental drugs. He cast friends and relatives in the main roles, directed it himself, operated the camera, and even did the editing. The finished film — about a wandering musician mistaken for a hitman who ends up in a deadly conflict with a local drug gang — caught the attention of Columbia Pictures, which gave it wider distribution. Critics praised the stylish flair of the low-budget film, and audiences loved it. Rodriguez became a Hollywood favorite. The sequel, Desperado, starring Antonio Banderas in the lead role, was shot under fully professional conditions, cost a thousand times more than the original, and wowed both journalists and audiences at the Cannes Film Festival.
