Little Miss Sunshine
Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris — USA — 2006 — 101 minutes — English + Czech subtitles

Little Miss Sunshine is an unconventional American family comedy about one of the most adorably dysfunctional families to hit the screen in recent years. The Hoover family isn’t exactly winning at life — but it’s certainly not for lack of trying. Father Richard, an irrepressibly optimistic motivational speaker, is desperately trying to sell his 9 Steps to Success” program — with little to no success. The mother, Sheryl, the family’s moral anchor, is constantly overwhelmed by the eccentric secrets surrounding her loved ones — especially her brother, a Proust scholar with suicidal tendencies who has just been released from the hospital. Then there are the younger Hoovers and their not-so-realistic dreams: bespectacled, slightly chubby seven-year-old Olive dreams of wearing the crown as a child beauty queen, while angry teenager Dwayne, a devout follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence until he’s accepted into flight school. To top it all off, there’s the foul-mouthed, pleasure-loving grandfather, recently kicked out of his retirement home for snorting heroin. They may not be the picture of mental health, but when Olive unexpectedly gets the chance to compete in the prestigious Little Miss Sunshine pageant, the entire Hoover family rallies behind her. They all pile into a rusty old van and set off on a three-day, tragicomic road trip full of surprises. What awaits them at the end is Olive’s big moment on stage — and a turning point that changes the family in unexpected ways.
