Andrew Neiman is a 19-year-old jazz drum­mer who dreams of great­ness, though he’s unsure whether his ambi­tions will ever come true. Haunt­ed by his father’s failed writ­ing career, he is deter­mined to rise to the top of the country’s most pres­ti­gious music con­ser­va­to­ry. One night, while Andrew is prac­tic­ing drums, he’s approached by Ter­ence Fletch­er — a con­duc­tor known as much for his teach­ing genius as for his ruth­less meth­ods. Though they exchange only a few words, Fletch­er awak­ens a deep hunger for suc­cess in Andrew. To Andrew’s sur­prise, the very next day Fletch­er requests that he be assigned to his stu­dio band. That sin­gle moment changes Andrew’s life for­ev­er. At first, he’s only allowed to turn pages for the lead drum­mer. But at the next com­pe­ti­tion, fate inter­venes — the lead drum­mer los­es his sheet music. Andrew, who has mem­o­rized the entire piece, is giv­en the chance to per­form. Though the move alien­ates him from the rest of the band, the ensem­ble wins the com­pe­ti­tion — and Andrew earns a shot at becom­ing Fletcher’s new favorite.
