A pro­gram­mer named Thomas A. Ander­son secret­ly leads a dou­ble life as the noto­ri­ous hack­er Neo. A series of strange events leads him to a group of peo­ple led by Mor­pheus, who offers him the chance to dis­cov­er what the Matrix tru­ly is. Neo is pulled out of the false real­i­ty and into the real, dev­as­tat­ed world — where the year is not 1999 (as it is in the arti­fi­cial Matrix), but 2199 (though Mor­pheus is unsure of the exact date; infor­ma­tion from the third film lat­er indi­rect­ly con­tra­dicts this). Human­i­ty is at war with intel­li­gent machines of its own cre­ation. After a long strug­gle, humans scorched the sky in an attempt to cut the machines off from solar pow­er. The machines respond­ed by enslav­ing human­i­ty, plac­ing peo­ple into pods, and feed­ing their brains a sim­u­lat­ed real­i­ty — the Matrix — a vir­tu­al world repli­cat­ing human soci­ety at its peak in 1999, where peo­ple unknow­ing­ly live out arti­fi­cial lives.
