Some­time in the 1990s, at a sea­side resort in Turkey, a young divorced father, Calum, is on hol­i­day with his almost-teenage daugh­ter Sophie. Calum’s easy­go­ing nature — always up for a laugh and amused when peo­ple mis­take him for Sophie’s old­er broth­er — masks a trou­bling under­cur­rent of melan­choly. Char­lotte Wells’ debut has the tone of a child­hood mem­o­ry, cap­tur­ing pro­found­ly intense emo­tions with­out the need for grand ges­tures.
