The film’s title says it all — this is a sto­ry cen­tered around alco­hol. There’s a the­o­ry that humans are born with a nat­ur­al alco­hol defi­cien­cy, and that main­tain­ing a small, steady lev­el of intox­i­ca­tion can open the mind, ease life’s bur­dens, and boost cre­ativ­i­ty. This idea intrigues Mar­tin (Mads Mikkelsen) and his three friends — high school teach­ers worn down by rou­tine — so they embark on an exper­i­ment: to keep a con­stant low lev­el of alco­hol in their blood through­out the day. If Churchill could win World War II with a fair amount of alco­hol in his sys­tem, who knows what a few drops might do for them — and their stu­dents? At first, the results are promis­ing. Class­es improve, con­fi­dence ris­es, and the group redis­cov­ers their zest for life. What begins as a play­ful aca­d­e­m­ic exper­i­ment soon feels like a break­through. But when the lim­its are pushed too far, some of them are forced to stop. It becomes increas­ing­ly clear that while alco­hol may have played a role in his­toric achieve­ments, bold actions often come with seri­ous consequences.
