SUMMER CINEMA IN THE KASÁRNA COURTYARD IS BACK!
How to Get Dad into Reform School
Marie Poledňáková — Czechoslovakia — 1978 — 91 minutes — CZ + ENG subtitles
At the première of the sequel to her now-famous comedy about little Vašek and his parents, How to Pull Out a Whale’s Tooth, writer and director Marie Poledňáková explained: “The second part, or rather a loose continuation, was actually written before How to Pull Out a Whale’s Tooth was even released. So it wasn’t inspired by the success of the first film, but by the fact that its final scenes created a very interesting situation. The actors captured this as well, and during the last phase of filming they began inventing scenes themselves, imagining the future of their characters; gradually the entire crew joined in this process. And the central idea? At first glance, it may seem like a light, amusing story. But if we think more deeply about the issue of an incomplete family and its possible rebuilding, we discover far more interesting insights. Luboš and Anna, Vašek’s parents, find themselves in a complicated situation. They try to understand each other, to respect their differences — initially mainly for the sake of their child. And the path to rebuilding a relationship that has already been broken once is anything but easy. The situation is quite unusual: two people, a man and a woman, meet again after eight years and must get to know each other anew. That was what drew me to the story — as well as the child’s world, with its dreams and desires, a world that simply refuses to accept anything that doesn’t align with its notions of goodness and justice.” A wonderful summer comedy which, as the author herself says, is not just about humor. Made more than twenty years ago, it still continues to entertain audiences today.
