The modern classic The Danish Girl by director Tom Hooper takes us to Copenhagen in the 1920s. Einar Wegener is one of the best Danish painters of his time, and his wife Gerda gives him her fullest support while trying to make her own breakthrough as a portrait painter. The slow crumbling of their harmonious relationship is set off by a trivial incident: when the model for Gerda’s series of ballet portraits fails to show up, Einar agrees to sit for his wife, dressed in a ballet costume. The intense connection with the feminine element within Einar unleashes enormous emotional turmoil. At first he copes with it through an “innocent” game of playing the mysterious Danish girl Lili, and later through an ever stronger conviction that only as a woman can he be happy.

Transgender Awareness Week serves to raise awareness of transgender and non-binary people and to celebrate the community, while also drawing attention to obstacles, discrimination and violence.
